This mistake arose from the oversight of a clerk, new to the accounts, who omitted to record in the Deposit Book two amounts withdrawn from deposit after entering them in the Ledger. The mistake was discovered by the Examining Agents at the end of the Quarter, when the Deposit Book kept by the Chief Accountant's Checker was checked by comparison with the Deposit Book kept by the Chief Cashier; and as soon as it was discovered, orders were given that the Deposit Books should in future be checked one against the other at the end of each month, instead of only at the end of the Quarter. It is not therefore likely that a mistake of this kind will occur again. I may add that no similar mistake has ever occurred before.
I observe that the Treasurer does not appear himself to have discovered the error,
